Oil and towels, and what the season does to both

Oil and towels are what a body to body hour actually consumes, and the weather outside changes how much of each an evening wants.

She brings the oil. You supply the towels, or the hotel does, and in the cold months the number matters more than people expect.

Oil, and temperature

Oil arrives warm and it does not stay warm on skin in a cold room. That is not a comfort point, it is the working reason a room is warmed first: oil that has cooled drags rather than glides, and the hour loses its shape. In a hot week the problem inverts. Skin that is already damp takes oil differently, a lighter application does more than a generous one, and the towel under you does most of the work the air conditioning is not there to do.

Towels, and how many

Two is the working minimum and four is comfortable. One goes under, one is for afterwards, and the spare pair covers the fact that hotel towels in this city are frequently smaller than the beds they are folded on. If the room came with two hand towels and one bath sheet, ask housekeeping in the afternoon rather than at nine in the evening, when the trolley has gone.

The bed, and the alternative

A bed works. A firm one works better than a soft one, and a towel across the middle of it saves an argument with a duvet. Nothing has to be laid out in advance, nothing has to be waterproofed, and no part of the format depends on the bathroom, which is precisely why it suits a room you have not tested. Formats that do lean on the plumbing are described on the services page, with a note about which rooms they suit.
